I'm starting to get wary of this "SEO" term.

Here's why:

I've gotten calls from SEO companies looking to sign me up - Here's an excerpt of copy taken from a site a salesperson wanted me to look at. Now this is the lead copy on the splash (landing) page:

Lexani wheels Lexani rims, promising you the finest selection of custom wheels and custom rims. Rims and wheels by Lexani customize my car with aluminum and steel custom rims by Lexani.

You have got to be kidding me. This is gibberish.

I told that to the salesperson, and he said "yea, but gibberish ranks"

Well, if I have to sound like a four-year old, count me out.

I realize not all SEO companies are this bad, but many still feel fine about leading off a site with "Buying your New York Chevy from Chevy of New York is a big decision that Chevy of New York will be happy to help New York Chevy buyers with".... doesn't that sound just a little odd to you?

Another SEO company's motto was "leads are everything."

Umm, no. Sales are everything.

Leads are useless by themselves. Give my writing 500 visitors, and give SEO gibberish 5,000, and I'll *still* outsell them.

Frankly, I'm beginning to think there are very few legitimate SEO companies out there. The bad ones are overwhelming, and they are making this industry a joke. I truly feel sorry for the few SEO professionals out there.

The very heart of the business for many companies is somewhat shady - "let's fool the search engines."

Also, how many people can be "promised" top rankings? Doesn't the equation break down somewhere? You can't promise 11 writers top ten placement for the keyword "writing".

It's this simple - your SEO company should be able to do everything they promise and leave the writing to the professionals. Just tell me the keywords, and I'll work them in.

A legitimate, professional SEO company will have no problem with this.
